Which Of These Two Road Bikes Has A More Aggressive Geometry?

I tried the 2008 Scott Contessa Speedster today and was wondering which had a more aggressive geometry- the Scott Contessa Speedster or the TRC Alliance w by Giant?

Also, the 2008 Scott Contessa Speedster was 20% off and I was wondering if I should go for it, or the little bit lighter 2009 model? What’s the difference between the two- what makes the 09 model lighter, better components?

Also, there is an amazing bike shop that I go to, but they don’t carry Giant bikes…do you think they’d be able to get a Giant for me if it’s what I decide to get? As I like their service a lot and would rather not change shops.

If you mean aggressive in terms of comfort, the Scott will have more aggressive geometry. Look at the Seat Tube Angle on both bikes. A higher angle will make you more aerodynamic and will place less effort on your quadriceps, which saves them for sprints. The only problem is that it can sometimes be uncomfortable.

As far as handling goes, it’s hard to tell. What usually decides it are: Head Angle, Wheelbase, BB Drop, and Fork Rake. In this case you can only compare the Head Angles, and they’re the same. I suspect the Scott might be a little more nimble, but that’s just guessing. They might have more measurements at the shop.

The weight is important when you’re going uphill, but not on flat terrain. If the area where you live only has a few hills, then don’t worry too much about weight. It’s a cycling myth. The only place where there will be a difference is at the wheels, but that should only be considered when you’re really serious about cycling (like racing). Aerodynamics play a much more important role than weight.
A few facts: Adding 1lb on to your bike is the equivalent of holding out a pencil into the air, in terms of air resistance. And the speed record on flat terrain for a bike is around 82Mph…the bike was 60 pounds but had an aerodynamic casing.

If the shop is a Giant dealer, you can ask them to order the bike so you can compare them both. That would really be the best thing for you to do. If not, try with another shop. Some shops make you buy the bike before ordering it. Whatever you end up getting, make sure it fits right…that’s the most important thing. Spend some time getting the bicycle fitted specifically for you.
